What is Baby Massage?

Infant massage is a traditional parenting practice in many parts of the world, where generations of mothers/caregivers offer nurturing touch to their babies. It provides a loving connection between parent and baby starting early in life, strengthening this attachment as the baby grows.

Today, countless research studies have supported the benefits of infant massage with impressive results for both parent and baby. Babies are able to relax and sleep better, they calm themselves more readily, and they thrive in many areas of infant health and development. Moreover, parents learn a way to better connect with their baby, by reading and being more aware of cues.

“She was wonderful. Very friendly, relatable, respectful, and open to all the questions. She was also patient and accommodating to all the parents and their babies especially if baby was fussy or sleeping.”

“I like the different massage techniques offered for all major parts of the body tailored to baby’s need and body structure/strength. Like how the instructor took care to explain the moves and approached them in a relatable and friendly way. Liked that it was broken out into 4 weeks to give us time to practice each body part.”

FAQ’S

Here you’ll find answers to our frequently asked questions. Please connect with me by filling out the contact form below, if you have a question that isn’t listed here.

There are no set guidelines regarding the minimum age for when to start baby massage with your little one. Although nurturing touch can be given from birth, some babies may find formal, structured massage too stimulating in the very early weeks.

As a result, many parents prefer to wait until their baby is about six weeks old when their routine is more settled and their behavior is sometimes more predictable.

We understand that every baby’s schedule will be different. We also understand that babies do a lot of sleeping during their early months of life. Under no circumstances do we encourage parents to massage their babies while they are asleep. If your baby falls asleep during class, you can continue watching the live class to learn the strokes, or use a doll or teddy bear, if there is one available to you. The same would apply if your baby falls asleep right before class. Strokes are emailed after each class so that you are able to practice on your baby when they are in (content wake) state.

You can continue giving massages to your child into the early years and beyond using adaptions as they grow. Your massage instructor will share different techniques to use during massage as the child grows through different stages. See how massage fits into your routine and family traditions and how your child will respond to them.

We encourage partners to join in on at least one session if possible, so they too can learn some of the strokes. If one parent is unavailable on any given day during the 4-week series, the other partner is more than welcome to join a session in place of the other parent.

*Only parents/caregivers are permitted to join the live class to massage baby.

We like to introduce babies to massage at their own pace. We watch their cues and introduce new strokes gradually, week to week. During our Sweet Pea Baby  Massage classes, you will be introduced to new information each week and build on previously taught techniques. Classes are designed to build relationships between parent and baby to instill trust and create positive associations. Long-term training sessions also encourage engagement between parents fostering opportunities for ongoing support and friendships long after the classes are over.
